Case Study: CD Urban Studio - Placemaking in St. Augustine

The Vision: Architecture as Stewardship

For CD Urban Studio, architecture is more than just drafting plans; it is an act of preservation and "placemaking." In the oldest city in the United States, the stakes for renovation are incredibly high. The firm needed to showcase their work on four major restaurant renovations along St. Augustine’s Avenida Menendez: River and Fort, Casa Reina, Saint, and White’s Wharf.

The goal was to answer a central, complex question: How do you adapt a historic structure for modern commercial use without losing the charm and character that makes St. Augustine iconic?

The Challenge: Visualizing the Unseen

As these were active, high-traffic restaurants, traditional "empty room" cinematography was impossible. Furthermore, the client initially struggled to condense their deep knowledge of architectural typology into a concise script. We faced a two-fold challenge:

  1. Narrative Flow: Converting academic architectural concepts into an engaging, human-centric story.

  2. Visual Scarcity: Creating a compelling visual experience without new interior footage of the finished spaces.

The Strategy: A Documentary Pivot

To capture the true essence of the firm, I convinced the owners to abandon the rigid scripting process in favor of an interview-led approach.

  • The Interview: By interviewing both the founders and the rising generation of talented architects, we captured a natural dialogue about culture, history, and the "nuanced challenges" of the St. Augustine waterfront.

  • The "Fly-Over" Solution: To compensate for the lack of interior access, I utilized Google Earth Studio to create custom motion graphics. This allowed us to zoom out and show how these four landmarks fit into the larger "urban fabric" of the city.

  • Mixed Media: I integrated pre-existing photography, technical renderings, and original drawings as B-roll to demonstrate specific architectural talking points.

The Deliverables:

I provided a multi-platform content strategy designed to introduce the CD Urban brand to a digital audience:

  • "Placemaking in St. Augustine": A flagship YouTube documentary (16:9) exploring the mission of the studio and the collective impact of the Avenida Menendez projects.

  • Four Project Reels: Dedicated segments for each restaurant vertically formatted for social media, providing deep-dives into the specific history and renovation process of each site.
